Post Missing or Corrupt: hal.dll
After installing Windows XP Sp3 and rebooting, I see this error when trying to boot for the 2nd time:
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll

whats the solution to resolve it ?

Don't worry, open boot.ini file on USB drive and find text:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

You need to edit part rdisk(0)partition(1) - change rdisk = number of your HDD, partition = number of partition.

For example - configuration 0 1 (default) is for HDD #1 Partition #1,
configuration 0 2 is for HDD #1 Partition #2,
configuration 1 1 is for HDD #2 Partition #1, etc.

May be you have brand PC with recovery partition, so set to 0 2 and try again.

I used Winflash to create bootable USB pendrive, but when I tried to boot it it returned the same error in this topic. When I went to edit the boot.ini file, here's what I found in it: :|

Question: how to recreate the correct boot.ini?

It looks like part of txtsetup.sif. Sure, it's invalid boot.ini.

real boot.ini have this text inside (created by WinToFlash):
Code:
[Boot Loader]
Timeout=30
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="2nd, GUI mode setup, continue setup + 1st start of Windows" /fastdetect
C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT = "1st, text mode setup (Boot from flash again after finished)"

Iwas having the exact same issue, based on the explanation above I changed the following line in boot.ini:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="2nd, GUI mode setup, continue setup + 1st start of Windows" /fastdetect

To:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS="2nd, GUI mode setup, continue setup + 1st start of Windows" /fastdetect

If you're getting this error the hard drive you're installing to likely contains other partitions such as diagnostics and recovery partitions.

If you got this far you should have seen the partitions available on the hard drive during the initial windows setup.

If you can't remember which partition is the right one, simply bump the number up by one and boot until you get the windows xp splash page.

Hope this helps.

Lastly, you'll need to edit the windows boot.ini file after the install goes through (if you didn't edit the boot INI before phase 1 of the install).

To do so right click on My Computer, go to Properties, Advanced and in the startup and recovery section click settings.

In the startup and recovery window click edit, and then make the same change you made in the boot.ini of your thumb drive.

Windows should now boot on it's own without the thumb drive.

pals, this is my boot.ini after having boot in my netbook:

KRNLPROVMF_ À;˜.’; À;˜.pµG KRNLPROVMO_ À;˜.’; À;˜.qµ} KS IN_ ¡P1’; ¡P1rµC KSC NL_ À;˜.’; À;˜.tµm KSCAPTURIN_ ¡P1’; ¡P1{µ— KSECDD SYS ¸‹1’; ¸‹1}µ€g KSFILTERIN_ ¡P1’; ¡P1”µ)
L3CODECAAC_ &Q1’; &Q1•µ‰ L3CODECXAX_ À;˜.’; À;˜.¶µb™ LABEL EX_ À;˜.’; À

But the worst is,i copy and paste the correct boot.ini provided by this thread in my pendrive, and after booting and failing, when unplugged it (and plugged in a pc), it shows the some or some other garbage, what´s going on?

It's problem with drive or file system. check the drive - it can be damaged

One of the main reasons for the Hal.dll error is a slipstreamed copy of XP... I would suggest a clean image/cd, I discovered this the hard way

There is nothing wrong with boot.ini, you don't need to change anything in that file.

When you see this page, - which I guess everyone will see that horrible error page! - just reboot the system and select to boot from USB drive again, then you will see the first boot menu again (the boot menu you have seen the first time you boot from the USB) now select the item that says:

"2nd, GUI mode setup, continue setup + 1st start of Windows"

And damned Windows splash screens appears.

WARNING : You just need to boot from the USB again this time, otherwise you will stuck in an endless loop of errors and editing boot.ini file.

Have fun!

another solution is to take a boot.ini from a working system and copy it to the c:\ on the new install. That is if you've succeeded in step 1 and step 2
